13 US Strategy in the Pacific Theater Island Hopping: strategy to gain military bases & secure the many small islands in the Pacific - led by General Douglas MacArthur, Commander of the Allied forces in the Pacific & Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander-in-chief of Pacific fleet US troops targeted islands not as strongly defended by the Japanese - took control of those islands, quickly constructed landing strips & small military bases - then they attacked other islands from the bases they established - Slowly the US forces moved closer to Japan by taking control of many of the surrounding islands February 1945: US troops invaded Iwo Jima first American landing on Japanese territory bloody fight that last 36 days, costs US 6, 381 men

14 US Strategy in the Pacific Theater April 1945: invasion of Okinawa, -bloodiest battle of Pacific war -Japanese launched massive Kamikaze attacks on US invasion fleet Island Hopping strategy = very costly -US soldiers not used to guerilla style of fighting -Japanese had advantage of controlling many of the islands - Many US soldiers succumbed to illnesses such as Malaria, dysentery & skin fungus BUT: island-hopping campaign was successful - allowed US to gain control over enough Pacific islands to get close enough to Japan to launch a mainland invasion However, island hopping took a long time & was very costly; even after European war was close to ending it looked like the Pacific war might continue. Fearing a drawn out war with many more casualties, US made plans to end the war quickly & force Japan’s surrender. US achieved this with the world’s first Atomic bombs.
