Lesson 5: A King’s Death John 19:14-30

Lesson Objective: To fully understand the role Jesus’ death played in atoning for the sin in our life.

Read Romans 6:23. What is the punishment for our sins? Is this too harsh? Why do we have to die for our sins? How did Christ address the issue of our sin necessitating the punishment of death?

Read Isaiah 59:2 and Deuteronomy 25:16. How does this make you feel? Uncomfortable? A little scared? Shamed? How does it feel to know that God hates sin, and our sin is detestable in God’s eyes?

Read Colossians 1:22. What did Jesus do for us? What does this mean exactly, that we have been reconciled?

Read John 8:34 and Mark 10:45. Can you relate to the idea of being held captive to sin? Are there times when you want to do right, but you find yourself doing wrong?

Read Romans 6:11 and 14. You have read a lot of Scripture in this activity. What is one of the thoughts or concepts that stands out to you? Have you ever thought about all that Jesus did for you? How do the concepts of reconciliation and redemption breathe new life into your understanding of what Jesus did for you on the cross?
