3 Nike’s “Just do it” campaign is one of the most recognized advertisement in the industry!!! Media & Advertising Just one advertisement that teens see daily! Primary purpose of advertising is to make you want to buy the product Hidden messages in advertising (pg. 49) Teens are exposed to 2,500 advertisements a day and close to a million a year!!! The Advertising industry spends $250 billion/year…WOW!!!!

4 Comparing choices You need to understand how to analyze the cost & accessibility of health care products 1. Cost: Decide a price range Compare similar products of different brands at different stores 2. Features: Avoid paying for features you don’t want/need 3. Quality: Inexpensive products are NO bargain if it breaks easily 4. Warranty: Is an extended warranty offered? 5. Safety: Underwriters Laboratory (UL) Products passed strict safety standards 6. Recommendations: Consumer report, Independent testing organization

5 Product labels  Products name, intended use, directions for use, precautions and warnings, and the amount in the container.  Ingredients: Active ingredients is what makes the product effective  Examples: DEET: Mosquito repellent SPF number  When comparing labels you can determine which contains more of the active ingredient.

6 Make sure you know your rights before you make a purchase!!! Your rights as a consumer What are your consumer rights? As consumers, you have certain rights, both before and after you purchase a product or service. However, sometimes consumers need help resolving a complaint The right to safety The right to choose The right to be informed The right to be heard The right to have problems corrected The right to consumer education More details on page 52

7 Make sure you’re ordering from a secure site!! Consumer ChoicesOnline shopping Today's consumers have more choices than ever before when it comes to product selection and ways to shop!! Price: Be wary of costly shipping! Convenience: Ordered and delivered directly to your home! Product Info: Cannot actually examine product or try it out! Write down confirmation #’s or other related info!

8 Lesson 2 Choosing Community Health Services Types of health care services: - All the medical care available to a nation’s people, the way they receive care, and the method of payment 1. Primary care physicians - Provide medical check-ups & general care - Include: school nurses & dentists 2. Specialists - Medical doctors trained to handle particular kinds of patients or medical conditions

9 Facilities for health care services -Preventative care are actions that prevent the onset of disease or injury  Inpatient care: requires patient to stay at facility overnight due to serious injury or illness.  Outpatient care: Allows patient to be treated & return home the same day. Private practices Physicians working for themselves, patients are seen on an outpatient basis, usually associated with a hospital Clinics Outpatient care provided in a community clinic rather than an office Group practices 2 or more doctors share office space, equipment, & staff Hospitals Both inpatient & outpatient Emergency rooms Care for potentially life threatening illness or injury Urgent care centers Usually handle emergency if not life threatening

10 How people pay for health services  Health insurance: - Plan in which part or all of medical cost are paid - The insured person pays a premium (free for coverage) 1. Out-of Pocket expense: - Pay for doctor visits & get reimbursed (%80) by insurance company - Usually for doctor visits or other forms of treatment 2. Deductable: - The amount insured person pays before the plan will start paying for health care services

11 Managed care plans Emphasize preventative care & offer reduced physician charges 1. Health maintenance Organization (HMD) - Pay monthly premium - Pay little if any out-of-pocket expenses 2. Preferred provider Organization (PPO) - Same as above, except members can choose someone outside the plan, but will pay more expenses
