1 Warm-up: Predict whether leaving the refrigerator door open on a hot summer day will help to cool the kitchen. Explain your answer.

When the fuel is burned inside the engine, the heat engine is called an internal combustion engine. When the fuel is burned outside the engine, the heat engine is called an external combustion engine.

5 Thermostats a device that controls the heater in a home. thermal expansion causes a bimetallic strip to coil and uncoil based on the temperature in the room … this turns the heater on and off. A bimetallic strip is made of two different metals … bi(2) metallic(metal).

7 Refrigerators a device that keep items cool by continuously moving the thermal energy of the items inside the device to the outside. compressors use electrical energy to compress the refrigerant, which passes through the inside of the refrigerator and removes thermal energy as it travels back to the outside of the refrigerator. Refrigerant is a gas that has a boiling point below room temperature, which allows it to condense very easily.

9 Heat Pumps a device that can heat or cool your home. Heat pumps are like refrigerators that can work in two directions. When a heat pump is used for cooling, thermal energy is extracted from the air in the house and pumped outside. When a heat pump is used for heating, thermal energy is taken from the air outside and is pumped inside.

10 How a Heat Pump Works

11 Geothermal Systems a device uses the thermal energy of the Earth to heat and cool your home. Like a heat pump, geothermal systems can work in two directions. When a geothermal system is used for cooling, thermal energy is removed from the air in the house and pumped through the earth where it cools off. When a heat pump is used for heating, thermal energy is absorbed from the earth and is pumped inside the home.
