Harvey Milk: Significance Harvey Milk was one of the first openly gay candidates to be elected into office. He won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. Less than a year later, in November 1978, he was assassinated, along with Mayor George Moscone, by former board member, Dan White.

The Message Milk gave this speech as a message to the nation about the gay community. In this speech, he discusses the “dialogue” that was beginning in the nation about homosexuality. He addresses frustrations and triumphs, struggles and successes.

The Rhetorical Situation This was the beginning of the nation’s conversation on homosexuality. Milk pushed to “break down prejudice” for all races and orientations. Minorities that are elected into office open doors for members of that minority group.
