Lesson Overview – Objective: To become more comfortable with public speaking Relevance: To help students prepare for presentations Materials: Tongue Twisted Electronic Handout Tongue Twisted: Set objective, explain relevance, have students form groups, have students open Tongue Twisted handout from your outbox, explain instructions, monitor progress. One Minute Speeches: Assign topics to groups, explain instructions for One Minute Speeches, give students two minutes to prepare, begin presentations. Provide feedback following presentations. Ask other students to give feedback on presenters’ volume, eye contact, posture, gestures and word choice.

Learning Target Students will effectively speak on a topic using techniques that are appropriate for audience and purpose Success Criteria: Command audience politely using eye contact Speak so that you are heard by all audience members Make consistent eye contact Use transitions Use gestures to emphasize key points Stay focused on the topic Use confident body language

Tongue Twisted For this activity you will need to arrange yourself into groups of four or five. Take turns reading the tongue twisters out loud to your group. If you make a mistake, start over from the beginning. Continue until all of the tongue twisters have been read out loud.

Instant Experts: One Minute Speeches You will be making a group presentation to the class Your topic will be selected at random Each person needs to speak for one minute, once the minute is up, the next person begins speaking on the same topic Once everyone has spoken, your group is finished You will have two minutes to prepare starting now.
