Give an example of each 3. A paleontologist is comparing the fossilized remains of two primates. Both animals had a prehensile tail. What can be concluded from this evidence? A. They were not related. B. They lived on the ground. C. They evolved from a common ancestor. D. They had bipedal locomotion.

7 I. Natural Selection causes populations to evolve There are other mechanisms that cause evolution: II. Mutation III. Gene Flow (immigration, emigration) IV. Recombination of chromosomes during gamete formation AND V. Genetic Drift – which are just chance events. Bad luck not bad genes! Examples: A. Founder effect – where a small segment of a population is displaced to a new area B. Bottleneck effect- a natural disaster leaves a few survivors (hurricane, fire, tornado, flood, etc)

8 Reminders Study Chapters 14-15 in your textbook for the exam Tomorrow. Bring a calculator and # 2 pencil TOMORROW Evolution Study Guide due TOMORROW. Answers will be posted by TONIGHT. Journals due Tomorrow. Finish up all handouts and place in your journal. You must have all three attached for it to be considered complete and ready to be graded Final Draft of your Research Report is due no later than Friday, 10-10-14. Attach your rough draft, the rubric used to grade your rough draft, and the rubric from your packet. You must have all three attached for it to be considered complete and ready to be graded. You will also turn your Final Draft of your Research report in to your English teacher through turnitin.com prior to October 10 th.
