Daily Objective To perform calculations using mole (mol) as a unit

1 paperclip has about 10 22 atoms!

Video! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1R7NiIum2TI&feature= youtu.be

The Mole Chemists use the term “mole” (mol) to refer to quantities of atoms. How big is one mole?

The Mole Chemists use the term “mole” (mol) to refer to quantities of atoms. 1 mole = 6.022141... X 10 23

How big is one mole? HUGE! You heard the song!

Or gentlemen!

Unit conversions (don’t hate) A mole is a number, just like a dozen or a score. It just happens to be a very large number. Ex. How many moles are in 3.01 x 10 23 atoms? For calculations, use 6.02 x 10 23 Answer: 0.5 moles of atoms

Unit conversions A mole is a number, just like a dozen or a score. It just happens to be a very large number. Ex. My paperclip has 1 x 10 22 atoms. How many moles of atoms does it have? Answer: 0.017 moles of atoms

What’s so special about the mole?

The mass of an atom is so small that it has its own unit too, called the Atomic Mass Unit (amu) 1 amu = 1.66... x 10 -27 kg When you look at the periodic table, masses of elements are listed in terms of amu. This is called atomic mass

What’s so special about the mole? Atomic mass is so small that it has its own unit too, called the Atomic Mass Unit (amu) 1 amu = 1.66... x 10 -27 kg When you look at the periodic table, masses of elements are listed in terms of amu. But when we’re doing an experiment, we weigh out our chemicals in grams.

1 mole of an element weighs as much as that element’s atomic mass, but in grams instead of amu 1 mole of an element weighs as much as that element’s atomic mass, but in grams instead of amu

I have 2 moles of iron. How many grams of iron do I have?

Answer: 111.6 g

I have 8 moles of oxygen (atomic mass 16). How many grams of oxygen do I have?

Answer: 128 g
