2 Introduction (1): Policy relevance Gross value added and employment of the EGSS are important indicators for green growth (OECD) BUT the EGSS is not ‘the one and only’ indicator for the green economy Measuring the supply side of the market for environmental related products. Monitoring win-win situations for both the economy and the environment Tracking export potentials and innovation behavior

3 Introduction (2), Dutch work on EGSS 5 year experience in the field of EGSS Work carried out in national accounts department, as part of environmental accounts Development in earlier years, statistic is since 2010 ‘in production’. Work load: approximately 0,5VTE every year. EGSS also part of integrated System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA)

4 Introduction (3), a short history First pilot study executed in 1999 by Statistics Netherlands (Eurostat) In 2006 the work resumed:Economic indicators for the Eco- Industries in the Netherlands, 2003 (Eurostat) In 2008 : Economic indicators for Resource Management activities in the Dutch Environmental Goods and Services Sector (Eurostat) In 2009 : Economic indicators for the Dutch Environmental Goods and Services Sector, timeseries for 1995-2007 (Eurostat) Work is still going on. Learning by doing aspect is very important. Every year methods are finetuned and populations have been changed due to new insights. Every year statistics are made.

5 Definition Eurostat 2009 definition is used: The environmental goods and services sector consists of a heterogeneous set of producers of technologies, goods and services that: -Measure, control, restore, prevent, treat, minimise, research and sensitise environmental damages to air, water and soil as well as problems relatedto waste, noise, biodiversity and landscapes. This includes ‘cleaner’technologies, goods and services that prevent or minimise pollution. -Measure, control, restore, prevent, minimise, research and sensitise resource depletion. This results mainly in resource- efficient technologies, goods and services that minimise the use of natural resources.

8 Methodologies (1) The EGSS consists of a very heterogeneous set of producers. Many different environmental activities have been identified by Statistics Netherlands as EGSS activities For every activity a specific methodology has been devoloped in order to compile the figures

14 Extra results on the sustainable energy sector The Ministery of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation requisted more detailed economic information on the sustainable energy sector In spring 2011 Statistics Netherlands executed an in depth study on the sustainable energy sector. Results will be updated every year and used for policy making and policy evaluation Results are presented in next sheets

22 Conclusions and discussion A lot of meso data has been compiled in the last five years. Core macro-economic indicators have been published. Main customers are branche associations and policy makers. More attention should be devoted to export data and innovation data. Micro analysis is desired to answer more policy related questions.
