suddenly completely Adding “ly” changes the word from an adjective to an adverb

scientist biologist farmer teacher “ist” means “one who practices” Adding “er” changes the root word from a verb to a noun

anxious Are you anxious to become a scientist? A chicken farmer who suddenly discovers how to make his hens lay more eggs might not be anxious to share his secret. Adjective: eager

observations One of the first things you can do is to make good observations. A hypothesis is a guess that is based on observations. Noun, plural of observation: an act of noticing something

examine Examine the people around you. Let’s examine an experiment. Verb - to look closely

crabbier Trying to get a moody baby to cooperate will make him even crabbier. Perhaps they also seem fatter, or thinner, or crabbier. adjective - Form of crabby: cross, in a bad mood

react You can mix harmless chemicals to see how they react to each other. If exercise makes a difference, both groups should react in the same way. Verb – to act because something has happened

results You can observe and record your results – just like a real scientist. Examine your results. Noun, plural of result: what you find out when you do an experiment

Hypothesis (hy-poth-e-sis) Your hypothesis is, “Giving my hens extra water causes them to lay more eggs.” A hypothesis is a guess that will be tested in an experiment. It is not a random guess. It is based on an observation.
