OVERVIEW Evolved from earlier traditions: Greek mythology, demons of middle ages, imagination of Bosch, nightmares of Goya, symbolism of Munch etc Attempts to visualize fantasy world of imagination Surrealism- beneath the realistic surface of life Recognizable subject matter- illogical situations Developed around fairly personal styles that didn’t always have explanation Post Freudian desire to paint and explore imagination
