Science and Thanksgiving are not two things we typically put together right? Well think again…. An Engineering Challenge: BOAT BUILDERS Can you and your teammates build a boat to carry the Pilgrims, their livestock, and their cargo without sinking? Materials: Modeling Clay Tub of water 10 mini marshmallows (aka the Pilgrims) 5 Tootsie Rolls (aka the livestock) 10 pennies (aka the cargo) Your goal is to make a boat that will float and carry the pilgrims, the livestock and the cargo without sinking or spilling any of the items out of the boat. Starch Test Ever wonder how much starch is in your Thanksgiving dinner? Materials: Iodine Eyedropper Table sugar, bread, banana slices, potato slices, and cucumber slices First dilute 5 mL of iodine with 5 mL of water. For each food sample have a control. Add a drop of water to each control sample. Then, add a drop of iodine to the other samples. Watch and wait for about 5 minutes. The ones that contain the most starch will turn the iodine blue or black.
