3 Europe-Totalitarian Government Came about because of economic conditions in Europe The Treaty of Versailles and the aftermath of WWI made the countries in Europe experience an economic downturn The economic conditions made it ripe for people like Hitler and Mussolini to take control – it’s easier to control poor people

4 FDR New Deal-purpose to stimulate the economy because of the Great Depression By employing people in government jobs, those people would have money to buy things which would keep other industries in business

5 1950’s There was an increase of home ownership in the 50’s due to the GI Bill McCarthyism-accused people of being communist without evidence – Joseph McCarthy was a senator who did this Bomb shelters were built because of the fear of the Cold War

6 Julius and Ethel Rosenberg Convicted of selling secrets about the atomic bomb and were executed McCarthyism and the Red Scare (American reaction to the fear that communist were working to destroy the American way of life) often violated the civil liberties of American citizens People were often Blacklisted or banned from jobs due to suspicion of being a communist

7 Manhattan Project Conducted in Los Alamos, New Mexico Created the Atomic Bomb This created a nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union Americans feared that the Soviets had superior technological superiority after they launched their satellite, Sputnik

8 Berlin Airlift Stalin cut off rail and road access (called a blockade) to the western side of Berlin The USA still had people inside Berlin so they flew supplies over the blockade and dropped them into Berlin to feed and supply the people

9 Cold War Non violent struggle for power between the Soviets and the Americans Soviets controlled satellite nations Winston Churchill came up with the “Iron Curtain” term the physical representation is the Berlin Wall

10 Television The first televised debate between JFK and Nixon. Those who watched said JFK won. Those who listened said Nixon won. It changed the way America would determine who would win the presidency.

11 Kennedy Encouraged the space race known as the “New Frontier” One reason he put so much money into the space program was because of Sputnik Lots of money was put into math and science so we could be compete with the Soviets

12 Cuban Missile Crisis US spy planes spotted a build up of missiles in Cuba Kennedy was president This was the closest the Soviet Union and the U.S. came to actual war

13 18 th amendment Prohibition Showed Americans were willing to break laws that interfered with their quest for pleasure Led to the rise in organized crime. Proved that the government could not regulate something like alcohol – no way to truly enforce the laws

14 Containment Restricted Soviet Expansion We got involved in Vietnam so we could contain communism. It was feared that if Vietnam failed so would Indo China- domino theory. Containment = stopping Communism

15 Gulf of Tonkin Got the US into the Vietnam War. Johnson was president Because Johnson sent troops in to Vietnam without permission from Congress the War Powers Resolution was passed. This was an attempt to take back war time powers from the president of the USA. President must notify Congress when sending troops in and the Congress must approve longer than 90 days of the troops occupation

16 26 th amendment Gave 18 year olds the right to vote 18 year olds thought if they had to go to war then they should be allowed to vote

17 Johnson Had a war on poverty Tried to create a Great Society

18 Roe vs. Wade Basically said that women could have an abortion. It said that women had a right to privacy.

19 Plessy v Ferguson Supported Jim Crow laws Established legal justification for segregation laws Brown vs Board of Education overturned these

20 Civil Rights Dr. Martin Luther King was the leader of the civil rights movement. I have a dream speech made him the symbolic leader of the civil rights Believed in civil disobedience to bring about change We Shall Over Come was the anthem of the civil rights movement

21 Leaders of Civil Rights Dr Martin Luther King Caesar Chavez-worked for the migrant workers Hector Garcia fought for the rights of migrant workers Betty Friedman (National Organization of Women-fought for equal pay for equal work)

22 Nixon and Title IX Involved in Watergate scandal Resigned instead of being impeached 1972-Title IX-responsible for the great upsurge in female sports teams on college campuses

23 Ford President not ever directly elected Prices of gasoline soared during his administration which was one cause of a stagnant economy in the early 1970s

24 Carter Camp David Accords-a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt Benefitted Israel and Egypt

25 OPEC The oil producing countries created an organization to set oil prices This effects the US because they control the price of gasoline and heating oil which in turn influences both the cost of living and the standard of living in the US

26 Reagan Appointed the first female Supreme Justice-Sandra Day O’Conner Responsible for a type of economics known as “supply-side economics” or “Reagonomics”
