Europe-Totalitarian Government Came about because of economic conditions in Europe The Treaty of Versailles and the aftermath of WWI made the countries in Europe experience an economic downturn The economic conditions made it ripe for people like Hitler and Mussolini to take control – it’s easier to control poor people

Berlin Airlift Stalin cut off rail and road access (called a blockade) to the western side of Berlin The USA still had people inside Berlin so they flew supplies over the blockade and dropped them into Berlin to feed and supply the people

Cuban Missile Crisis US spy planes spotted a build up of missiles in Cuba Kennedy was president This was the closest the Soviet Union and the U.S. came to actual war

18 th amendment Prohibition Showed Americans were willing to break laws that interfered with their quest for pleasure Led to the rise in organized crime. Proved that the government could not regulate something like alcohol – no way to truly enforce the laws

Containment Restricted Soviet Expansion We got involved in Vietnam so we could contain communism. It was feared that if Vietnam failed so would Indo China- domino theory. Containment = stopping Communism

Gulf of Tonkin Got the US into the Vietnam War. Johnson was president Because Johnson sent troops in to Vietnam without permission from Congress the War Powers Resolution was passed. This was an attempt to take back war time powers from the president of the USA. President must notify Congress when sending troops in and the Congress must approve longer than 90 days of the troops occupation
