Independent Reading Project: Book Review
2
What Is A Book Review ? A written opinion of what you think of a certain book NOT A SUMMARY of the plot or action!
3
A Good Book Review... Gives a statement telling the genre and what types of people would enjoy reading this book. Gives your personal opinions and thoughts about the book and relates the book to your personal life. Leaves the reader in suspense, encouraging them to read the novel! It DOES NOT give away the ending!
4
Paragraph 1 Must be stated in the 1 st paragraph: title, author, genre, awards, important characters, general plot— but DO NOT give away the ending! Try to work in lit terms: Ex: protagonist, antagonist, climax, conflict, imagery, etc. REMEMBER: 3.8 format!
5
Paragraph 2 In the 2 nd paragraph you want to include your personal opinions about the book and how parts relate to our lives. DO NOT SUMMARIZE THE BOOK! MUST BE A 3.8!!!
6
Paragraph 2 Some ideas for discussion in paragraph 2: Could you relate to the conflict? Was the climax exciting? Disappointing? What message/theme did the novel send? How is the theme relevant to our lives today? Could you identify with any character? Were the characters believable or unrealistic?

Other things to think about… While formal essays do not use first person (I, me, my, etc.), it is okay to use this in your book review. Check for proper MUGS! Must be typed in MLA format!! Use 4 line MLA header, appropriate margins & spacing.
