Poverty means regularly not having enough to eat, inadequate shelter, little or no health care, unemployment and lack of access to education. It means limited choices and opportunities. Poverty is not something that happens as an accident of circumstance. Poverty is created by human decisions. For the poor in the Developing World these decisions can be made thousands of miles away by people who have no interest in the human consequences, but seek only profit for themselves. There is a clear moral question surrounding the issue of poverty. Is it morally acceptable that: 30,000 children die each day as a result of extreme poverty Each day almost 800 million people do not get enough food and about 500 million are chronically malnourished 1.2 billion people live without access to safe drinking water Half the world’s population live on less than $2 a day 20% of the population in developed nations consume 80% of the world’s goods A mere 12% of the world’s population uses 85% of its water and these 12% do not live in the developing world

Every year 15million children die of hunger For the price of one missile a school full of hungry children could eat lunch every day for 5 years The combined assets of the worlds 3 richest men are more than the combined GNP of ALL the least developed countries in the world In the 1990’s over 100 million children died from illness and starvation. These could have been prevented for the price of 10 Stealth Bombers or what the world spends on its military every TWO days! Since starting to read this, 500 people have died of starvation
