(page 37L) What is a Narrative? Tells a story Reads like a book Characters (you might be a character) Has a setting (place) Biography= story about a person’s life written by someone else (written in 3 rd person) Autobiography= story about a person’s life written by that person (written in 1 st person)*** Paints a picture in the reader’s mind – Details describing sight, smell, touch, sounds, tastes, thoughts, and feelings. The story flows in chronological order – First, Second, Third, …, Lastly

(37L) Narrative… First, decide on the main events (plot) – There should be a beginning, a middle, and an end Second, describe the setting with visual details – The setting is where the story takes place

(37L) Narrative… Third, create interesting characters in your story. Fourth, build your story up toward a turning point in the story. – This is where something big happens Lastly, you will resolve some problem in the story – You are wrapping everything up – “…And they lived happily ever after…”

Narrative Quick Write (37R) Think of an important event in your life that changed you in some way. This could be the birth of a sibling, the death of a person, moving to a new city/state, etc. This should not be going to the mall or getting an awesome pair of shoes. Write at least half a page telling of this event with as much detail as you can remember.

Details… Don't describe a waitress's eyes as blue - say they are as blue as the neon in the flickering sign outside Frankie's Grill. Without details… Grandmother Workman reached over and grabbed her grandson’s arm. He was nervous because the staircase was so steep, but she leaned against him and they began to climb.

With details… Grandmother Workman lurched over and grabbed the pale skin of Randal’s thin forearm with her leathery hand. The folds and creases beneath her skin coiled themselves out like electrical wiring, like the bloated, roughly-textured relief map of the world that his mother just posted above his bedside table. Randal looked ahead toward the winding spiral staircase, fidgeted with a small hole in his baseball jersey, and bit his lip. His mouth filled with the sweet, coppery taste of blood as she leaned in closely toward him, breathing her hot breath on the damp hair at the base of his neck. She smelled of wet cigarettes and bacon. As they slowly climbed the long, steep staircase, the only sound was his grandmothers’ labored breathing and the mournful creak of the wooden stairs.

(38L) Details Practice Rewrite the following with as much detail as possible. Appeal to the sense(s) listed at the end. 1.I skinned my knee. (smell + taste) 2.I was really excited. (touch + sight) 3.My sister was cute. (sound + touch) 4.I was nervous about the test. (taste + sound) 5.My goldfish died. (smell + sight)
