Capoeira

Origins  Capoeira is a brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics and music and is sometimes referred as a game.  It was developed in brazil mainly by african descendants with native brazilian influences  It is known for quick complex moves, using mainly power, speed and leverage for a wide variety of kicks, spins and higly mobile techniques

 In the sixteen century Portugal claimed one of the largest territories of the colonial empires but lacked the people to work it, as many colonist Portugal chose to use slavery to supply the shortage of workers

 Portuguese colonist created farms for the slaves to live in inhumane conditions and constantly being abused by the colonist.  In this harsh environment capoeira was born as tool of survival for escaped slaves against the colonist.  Escaped slaves would then form settlements to become independent.

 Short after more and more escaped slaves joined these settlements and capoeira started to be practiced more to defend the settlements against colonist.  It usually took more than one or two soldiers to take down a capoeira fighter

Social element in Brazil  By the end of the 19 century capoeira was doomed in the brazilian empire reasons included raids by militias that still used slaves in villages. Brazil tried to soften this up by resticting laws allowing slavery.  However free former slaves felt abandoned and without a job they started using capoeira in unconventional ways.  Criminals and warlords used capoeiristas as body guards and hitmen.  In 1890 the brazilian republic decreed the prohibition of capoeira in the whole country.

 After the prohibition any citizen caught practicing capoeir would be arrested, tortured and even mutilated by the police.

 Since 1970 capoeira masters started to emigrate and teach capoeira in other countries.  By 1940 capoeira finally lost its criminal connotation and was legalized.
