1
Cell Theory All organisms are made up of one or more cells. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in all organisms. All cells come from cells that already exist.
2
organelle structures in the cytoplasm that break down food, move wastes, and store materials, create materials RWA The different parts that make something up
3
cell/plasma membrane forms the outer boundary of the cell allows only certain materials to move in and out of the cell RWA Security guard or fence
4
cytoplasm the gel-like material inside the cell membrane and outside the nucleus organelles function within the cytoplasm RWA Water in the ocean that lets aquatic life do its work, boundaries of a sports field that lets athletes play a sport
5
mitochondria The “powerhouse” of the cell, breaks down food molecules to make energy for the cell RWA Power plant that converts one form of energy into electricity
6
Nuclear Envelope Allows RNA and ribosomes to exit and enter Keeps other organelles out RWA – Security guard or fence
7
nucleus a structure that directs all activities of the cell RWA coach, boss, movie director
8
Nucleolus found in the nucleus contains RNA makes ribosomes
9
chromatin hereditary material (DNA) found in the nucleus Carries instructions for cell/organism RWA Recipe book, plans to build something
11
endoplasmic reticulum a folded membrane “highways” that transport ribosomes two types smooth rough covered with ribosomes RWA Hiking trail, street, highway
12
Golgi bodies an organelle that packages (wraps in a membrane) and tags chemical compounds RWA Post office
13
lysosome an organelle that breaks down wastes and worn out cell parts and recycles them RWA wrecking crew
14
ribosome synthesizes proteins Uses codes (RNA) from the nucleus to synthesize or make proteins RWA Factory, construction worker
15
Cytoskeleton An organized network of protein filaments that: helps things move around in the cell allows muscles to contract maintains cell shape RWA Any supporting framework
16
vesicle Deliver compounds throughout the cell RWA “Tim the UPS man”
18
mitosis A cell division that produces two new cells that are identical to the original cell Happens for growth and development and repair of old or damaged cells
