The Amazing Newborn Use their senses to learn about the world Sensitive to strong light and sounds Cries to signal a variety of needs, such as for food, attention or a wet diaper

Reflexes Rooting: an automatic response, when touched on the lips or cheek, of turning toward the touch and beginning to suck. This reflex helps find food. Grasp: automatic response for the hand to close when something comes in contact with the palm.

continued Startle: automatic response to a loud noise or to a touch on the stomach. The legs are thrown up, fingers spread and arms are extended

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) When an infants dies in their sleep Affects babies between 2 weeks to 6 months old Likely to be male, low birth weight, premature, around people smoking, sleep on their stomach & usually during the winter months
