Lav, Lau, lu = wash Launder: to disguise the source of, usually by transmitting through foreign banks Lavatory: a room fitted for plumbing with which to wash oneself You can eat out of a toilet bowl in this Japanese restaurant.

Leg, lec, lex = read, speak Lecture: speech read or delivered in front of an audience or class Lexicon: a dictionary or wordbook

Lev = light Levity: lightness of mind, spirit or behavior, lack of appropriate seriousness Alleviate: to make easier to endure; lessen, mitigate

Liber = free Libertine: person morally or sexually unrestrained; licentious Liberal: favorable to progress, reform; favoring freedom of action

Lig, lect = choose, gather Select: to take as choice from several Eligible: fit or proper to be chosen; worthy to be chosen, selected

Lig, li, ly = bind Ligature: anything that serves to tie or bind Lien: legal claim of one person on the property of another to satisfy a debt

Ling, lang = tongue Lingo: language/speech, esp. the jargon, of a particular people or group Linguistics: the study of language, including phonetics, pragmatics, and semantics

Liter = letter Literal: the primary, strict, non-metaphorical and non-figurative meaning of a word Alliteration: use of the same syllable at the beginning of each stressed syllable in a line Example: Señor Smithyman smells superb.
