1 Welcome to English 11 Lise Cormier Boudreau Room 1101 lise.m.cormier@nbed.nb.ca

2 English grade 11 focuses on a study of fiction and non-fiction literature, of different styles of writing and includes individual as well as group activities. Thus, students are required to interact in English on a daily basis. It is crucial that each student be responsible for his or her class work, notes, evaluations, and class attendance.

3 Three main areas of work: Reading Writing Speaking

4 Main Evaluations Reading: Two novels and three short stories (reading comp.) Writing: Three, 300-word essays Speaking: One formative OP(individual) and two summative OP (1 group OP-1 individual OP) 3 minutes these are minimums 4 minutes CategoryValue Reading35% writing35% Speaking30%

5 Two novels: First novel: read in class Second novel : a true classic(read on your own) 1: Night 2-Lord of the Flies

6 3 reading comps remove one (lowest grade) BTW: Reading is fun!

7 Writing Practices (Formative) You and I will track your writing progress throughout the semester This should allow you to grow as a writer AND to get better grades as the semester continues

8 Three Writing Evaluations (300 words each; -3 pts each spelling mistake; -2 pts each grammar mistake): 1) First Essay (choice between 7 subjects) 2) Night Essay (reflective essay about the content of the book)-will count as your novel test 3) Professional Essay (choose one) : Career choice college application scholarship application

9 Oral Presentations(Power-Point presentations): 1) Artist/Athlete (formative OP) : Chance to practice before the real evaluation ! Minimum 2 minutes-individual 2) Night (summative OP) : research on a specific person or event from the Concentration Camps during WWII-minimum 4 minutes each-groups 3) Movie Critique (summative OP): minimum 3 minutes-individual

10 Required Materials Paper, binder, pen, pencil, eraser, liquid paper, USB… YOU are responsible to bring your material to class…
