Now: 1850 (ish) Slavery is still a big issue- Should the new territories be allowed to be slave states? California wants to join the Union—should it be free or slave? Angers Northerners and Southerners- WHY???
7
Southerners: California coming in as FREE would tip the balance in Congress towards the North Texas, New Mexico will probably come in as free Washington, DC- very close to banning slave trade (largest slave market there) What does this sound like???? What has to happen?
8
Compromise Offered Henry Clay- Senator from the West 1. Congress admits California as FREE 2. New Mexico and Utah territories- slavery determined by ‘popular sovereignty’ 3. Slave trade (not slavery) ends in DC 4. Congress pass a stricter fugitive slave law
9
Responses Daniel Webster (north), John Calhoun (south) Calhoun= not enough protection for the SOUTH. Let them SECEDE if they want in peace. Webster= UNIFY. But…slavery would not be necessary in the West (the land wouldn’t allow for those types of crops)
