4 David Berkowitz “Son of Sam”
Early Life: David was adopted by a Jewish couple when he was a baby. As a child, he was an above-average student and was a baseball player but earned a reputation of being a bully. He often set fires in his house in order to gain the attention of his parents. He was in the U.S Army from 1971 to Eventually, he found his birth mother but fell out of contact with her after he learned the details of his conception and birth. Later, David began describing himself as a born again Christian.

5 David Berkowitz “Son of Sam”
The Killings On Christmas Eve 1975, “demons” drove Berkowitz to go out with a hunting knife and find someone to kill. He confessed later on that he stabbed two women that night. One victim, 15-year-old Michelle Forman, survived the attack but had six knife wounds. Soon after the attacks, Berkowitz moved out of the Bronx to a two-family home in Yonkers. It was in this home that the Son of Sam was created.

6 David Berkowitz “Son of Sam”
The Arrest When the police came to arrest David Berkowitz, he surrendered and identified himself as Sam. After an evaluation it was found that he was fit to stand trial. He pled not guilty and received a 365-year sentence.

7 Theodore Robert “Ted” Bundy
Early Life Ted was born in Vermont to an unwedded woman, Louise. In order to cover up this disgrace from society, Louise’s parents claimed that Bundy was their son. Ted grew up believing that his birth mother was actually his older sister. It was not until High School when he learned the truth about his mother. Even before he was out of High School he was a shoplifter that was arrested twice. He eventually moved to Washington with his birth mother, where she got married and had four other children.

8 Theodore Robert “Ted” Bundy
The Killings Bundy’s earliest confirmed murder was committed in His first few victims were young women from the University of Washington. Later he moved to Utah to attend Law School and resumed killing young woman there. In 1975, Bundy shifted his killings to Colorado. A few years after that he was reported to strangle and sexually assault two sorority girls at the Florida State University Chi Omega sorority house. Then he traveled to Lake City, Florida and raped and murdered a 12-year-old girl named Kimberly Leach.

9 Theodore Robert “Ted” Bundy
Modus Operandi Bundy would usually approach his victims in a public place, sometimes in a crowd or in daylight. He would gain the trust of his victims by pretending to be injured or by pretending to be an authoritative figure such as a policeman. After he lured them to his car he would hit them with a crowbar. All of his victims were middle class white females with long straight hair and between the ages of He later admitted that he would often go to the dead body site, lie next to the corpses, put make-up on them and have sex with them.

10 Theodore Robert “Ted” Bundy
Execution In 1979, Bundy went to court for the Chi Omega murders, where he acted as his own attorney. Evidence such as the bite marks found on one of the sorority girl’s buttocks that matched the plaster casts of Bundy’s teeth helped prove Bundy guilty. He was sentenced to death. He was convicted for the murder of Kimberly Leach and proved to be guilty because of fiber evidence. The fibers found in Bundy’s car matched the fibers found on Leach’s clothing. He was again sentenced to death. On January 24, 1989 Ted Bundy was executed on the electric chair.

11 John Wayne Gacy “Killer Clown” Early Years
John Wayne Gacy was born into a middle class family. His father was an abusive alcoholic who physically abused his mother and verbally abused John. John suffered from epilepsy throughout his childhood and teenage years. John’s father was homophobic and often mocked John, calling him a “he/she” and accusing him of being weak and effeminate because of his bad health. Mr. Gacy said John would never amount to anything, which proved true when he was not able to graduate high school.

13 John Wayne Gacy “Killer Clown” Arrest
Neighbors noticed the foul stench that came from Gacy’s house. His wife also divorced him, for he began to have violent mood swings and admitted to her that he preferred young boys over her as sexual partners. As the killings proceeded, young boys around the area continued to go missing and suspicions arose. A young boy named Robert Pierce went missing after he stated that a man offered him a contracting job. This led police to Gacy’s business, and after they did a background check on him, got a warrant to search Gacy’s home. Once police told Gacy they were going to dig under his house, he confessed to murdering over 30 people. The remains of many were found in his crawlspace, as well as in the nearby river. Forensic investigators used remains and dental records to try and identify the victims.

14 John Wayne Gacy “Killer Clown” Trial & Prison
Gacy’s lawyers tried to plead insanity and claim that Gacy could not resist his impulses and urges to kill. However, it was proven that Gacy was in fact sane and very intelligent. Gacy showed no remorse for his actions during the trial and was faced with the death sentence. Gacy’s relationship with his abusive father is known to be a possible motive for his many killings. Gacy painted many pictures of clowns in prison which became popular to buy. “Killer Clown”

15 Albert DeSalvo Early Years
Albert was born into a family of six children. His father, Frank was an extremely abusive alcoholic who regularly beat his mother in front of the children, once breaking her fingers. He also brought home prostitutes and had sex with them in front of Albert. Frank was also a shoplifter and brought Albert with him as he stole. Albert eventually picked up his father’s bad habits. As a teenager Albert was known as a criminal and frequently got into trouble.

16 Albert DeSalvo The Boston Strangler Killings
There were eleven official Boston strangler killings, the age ranging from The Strangler would not break into the homes of these women, they would consent to his entrance. He then strangled them with their clothing, usually their nylon stockings, their bodies left naked and their legs open. Drawers were open and houses ransacked, but nothing of significance was stolen. However, there were differences in the bodies. In some cases, sperm was present and the bodies were decorated. One victim was left with a “Happy New Year” card in between her toes. Others had no sperm present. The difference in physical evidence and age gap between victims led the police to believe there was a copycat murderer.

17 Albert DeSalvo The Boston Strangler Confession
DeSalvo had first gotten in trouble with the police for his reputation as the “measuring man”. He pretended to be from a modeling agency in order to take body measurements from several women. Years later he broke into a women’s house, tied her to a bed post and began to rape her. However, as he fondled her he began to apologize and fled the scene. Arrested, DeSalvo admitted to breaking and entering several houses and to a few rapes. Later, he admitted to being the Boston Strangler.

18 Albert DeSalvo The Boston Strangler DeSalvo or Not?
Albert’s confession was seriously questioned by the police. However, Albert’s recollection of the minute details of each killing was precise and exact. Although all of his details were not completely true, he remembered small details that showed he was clearly present at the crime scene. However, all those who knew Albert, including his own psychiatrist believed that he was responsible for the murders. They argued that no one had ever saw Albert at the crime scene. No piece of physical evidence could be found to link Albert to any of the murders. A witness who had almost been raped by the strangler saw Albert and was convinced that he was not the Strangler. Some insisted that the killings were not done by one person because of the difference in the victim’s ages.

19 Albert DeSalvo The Boston Strangler Possible Motives
DeSalvo had a tendency to brag or tell stories. It is possible that he claimed to be the Strangler for notoriety and fame. He also was in jail for the crimes he already committed. Afraid his family would have no money, confessing as the Strangler offered possible money possibilities. He also planned on pleading insanity, which would give Albert the privilege of spending the rest of his sentence in a mental home instead of prison. It was never certain that DeSalvo was actually the Boston Strangler, but he was found guilty by the court for the murders. DeSalvo was not considered insane, and was stabbed in prison by a fellow inmate years later. Thank you for a GREAT Seminar tonight – What did you think of these “men”? Questions & Concerns? Dr. C
