3. 3 Seven thousand years ago, Skåne and Denmark formed a single piece of land. The ice covering the Nordic region melted, creating the straits of Öresund. A series of wars between Sweden and Denmark were fought in Skåne. Skåne has been a part of Sweden since 1658. Skåne was made a single county in 1997. Skåne and Denmark

4. 4 Region Skåne Region Skåne was formed on 1 January 1999. Region Skåne is a regional organisation with responsibility for the health, medical and dental care of its inhabitants. Region Skåne is also increasingly responsible for issues affecting Skåne in the future. The Regional Council is the highest decision- making body where important regional issues are discussed by an assembled, joint organisation.
