2. OUR VISIT TO THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT 18 TH JANUARY 2016

3. We were lucky enough to visit the Houses of Parliament earlier this year. We went on a tour around the inside. The Houses of Parliament are made up of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. We’ll tell you more about those later.

7. The Houses of Parliament are in London. In the Houses of Parliament they make laws. There are three parts of making a law: House of Commons House of Lords And the monarch (The Queen) We will be talking about each of them. Enjoy our presentation on the Houses of Parliament.

8. The House of Lords is one of the three parts of making a law. It has a real gold chair where the Queen sits once every year to open parliament. This is unlike the House of Commons where the Queen is not allowed. You can become a lord in two ways. 1) By inheriting the title and 2) By being good at something!

9. To debate in the House of Commons you must be an MP (Member of Parliament). There are lots of different political parties who sit in the House of Commons but the main ones are; The Conservative Party, The Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats. David Cameron sits in the House of Commons because he is part of the government. He is our Prime Minister. He leads the Conservative Party. Our local MP is Anna Soubry.

10. The monarch is the final stage that a new law needs to go through. This is were the Queen signs new bills that are being proposed and turns them into a law. The Queen can in fact say no to signing the law but the last time that happened was 1704 (312 years ago).
