2. Changes  Resulted in the creation of modern boundary lines in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Drawing borders based on where Europe wanted them with no consideration of traditional ethnic boundaries which will cause war and political strife to this day.  Contributed to a globalized economy  Inspired “healthy” competition between European countries who were racing to build empires and wealth.  Caused political unrest, starvation, loss of power, and increased racism/belief in white superiority in the regions taken over.

Key Terms to Remember  Imperialism: The seizure of a country or territory by a stronger country for its own economic gain.  Colony: A country or territory governed internally by a foreign power.  Protectorate: A country or territory with its own internal government but under the control of an outside power.  Sphere of Influence: An area in which an outside power claims exclusive investment or trading privileges.  Economic Imperialism: An independent but less- developed country controlled by private business interests rather than other governments.

Vocabulary  Paternalism: policy in which Europeans governed local populations in a parental way by providing for their needs but not giving them rights.  Assimilation: policy that was based on the idea that in time, local populations would adopt their conquering nations culture and language (this is why for example in India one of their favorite sports is cricket which was originally British and in some African countries the language spoken is French).  Social Darwinism: Social theory that argued natural selection and evolution could be applied to human society. Those who were wealthy and cultured according to European standards were more evolved than non-Europeans whose culture they dismissed as backward. This theory was used to justify Europe's take over of Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia.  Geopolitics: an interest in or taking of land for its strategic location or products.
