1 Peter Living Hope in a Fallen World 3:1-7 Paul J. Bucknell Marriage Advice!

A Living Hope A) A Precious Calling (1:3- 2:10) Introduction (1:1-2) B) A Holy Lifestyle (2:11-3:12) Outline of 1 Peter Embrace our calling to live out holy lives By learning how to conduct ourselves as chosen people of God, we can live vibrant Christ-filled lives in this dark and often hostile world. Live godly lives to help others know Christ * Among harsh rulers (2:13-17) * In disharmonious marriages (3:1- 7) * In generally difficult circumstances (3:8- 12) * Among unsympathetic masters (2:18- 25) “Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts, which wage war against the soul. 12 Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may on account of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation” (1 Peter 2:11-12). Wives (3:1-6) Husbands (3:7)

Marriag eAdvice 1 Peter 3:1-7 “3:1 In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, 2 as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior. 3 And let not your adornment be merely external--braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; 4 but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. 5 For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands. 6 Thus Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear. 7 You husbands likewise, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with a weaker vessel, since she is a woman; and grant her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered (1 Peter 3:1-7, NASB).

Marriag eAdvice 1 Peter 3:1-7 Man rules without any sensitivity as a despotic ruler. Marriage Tension Underlying tension in marriages Countering the sweet oneness of marriage Woman tries to usurp man’s God-given duty to lead. “But he shall rule over you” (Gen 3:16) “Yet your desire will be for your husband” (Genesis 3:16 - desire Gen 4:7).

Marriag eAdvice 1 Peter 3:1-7 “They may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives” (1). The Wife’s Path Wives’ vulnerability is actually their strong point when they understand and embrace the spiritual principle of submission. “Be submissive to your own husbands.” (1) “With the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit.”(4)

Marriag eAdvice 1 Peter 3:1-7 Fear and faith act as opposites. Live by one and the other will be absent. Extra support * Past examples (5) * Sarah’s own example (6) * Danger of fear (6) “5 For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands. 6 Thus Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear” (3:5- 6).

Marriag eAdvice 1 Peter 3:1-7 “So that your prayers may not be hindered” (7b) The Husband’s Path Husbands can spiritually grow and effectively serve only as they kindly treat and value their wives. “Live with your wives in an understanding way” (7a) “Grant her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life” (7b) “You husbands likewise, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with a weaker vessel, since she is a woman; and grant her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered” (1 Peter 3:7).

Marriag eAdvice 1 Peter 3:1-7 As fellow heir of the grace of life Gain a quiet spirit A Greater Goal Wife’s goal Don’t just tolerate each other but treasure God’s whole purpose for you. Husband’s goal Be understanding Be submissive
