9. Teri’s Husband  Teri’s husband wanted Teri to be taken off life support. Teri’s Family  Teri’s family believed that Teri COULD think and wanted her to stay on life support.

10.  After seven years of arguing in court, the Supreme Court of the United States ordered Teri’s feeding tube to be removed. This is called “euthanasia.”  There is still a debate in The United States about whether euthanasia is moral or not.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8W7tep6l xOQ

CASE #2: Brittany Maynard  Brittany Maynard was 29 years old, lived in Northern California, and had a loving husband.  She graduated from University of California Berkeley and University of California Irvine with a masters in education. She loved to travel and volunteer with animals.  However, soon after she got married, she discovered she had a severe form of brain cancer. The doctors told her she had less than 6 months to live.

12.  Brittany did not want to go through the terrible symptoms of brain cancer, so she decided to move to Oregon, where “assisted suicide” is allowed because of a “Death with Dignity” Law.  In Oregon, if you are terminally ill, a doctor can prescribe you lethal medication.  http://ktla.com/2014/10/07/terminally-ill-woman-29-chooses-to-die-two-days-after- husbands-birthday/

15. The Doctor Is In 1. Choose who will be the “doctors” and the “patients.” I will hand out scenario cards. 2. The doctors and patients have 2-3 minutes to write down ideas to for arguments they may make (think about what the doctor and patient may argue!). 3. The Doctor sits in the Doctor Chair and waits for his or her patients to come in. Each doctor has 2-3 patients. 4. The patients try to convince the doctor to prescribe lethal medication to them or provide euthanasia for a relative (5 minutes each). 5. The doctor chooses whether to prescribe the medication or provide euthanasia and asks the audience if they agree with their decision.
