Context of Tallaght IAP:  Strong working relationship between Partnership and South Dublin County Council (SDCC)  EU URBAN Initiative

 Aim: to ensure that the Urban Renewal Scheme would address the physical, economic, social and environmental regeneration of Tallaght Town Centre and the disadvantaged West Tallaght residential neighbourhoods  Focus on unemployment and communities identified as disadvantaged

IAP outputs for disadvantaged communities :  €1,475,312 grants for community organisations in West Tallaght  €502,307 investment in small scale community infrastructure  262 general operative jobs; 34 apprenticeships; 28 work experience placements; 34 persons trained.  Completion of large community infrastructure €3,818.362

What made the IAP work?:  Shared vision  Integrated cooperative model  Political acceptance / support for process

What were the challenges?:  Bringing all relevant SDCC staff along with process  Clarity re flow of resources – how much and when  ‘cultural differences’  Financial crisis!

What did I learn?:  SDCC enabled a very effective alternative funding initiative.  Success dependent on key individuals  ‘Control’ remained with SDCC  Not philanthropy

Building stronger communities?:  Local Authorities supporting / partners in County based Community Foundations  Building Foundation practice by contract to manage LA grant schemes  Win the endowment argument
