2 Standards Addressed: 1.3 Career Preparation, Job Acquisition and Retention (C): Students will understand the career preparation and job acquisition skills required for employment, professional growth, and employment transitions in the field of business occupations. They will demonstrate competency by researching career options, applying job acquisition skills, preparing job search documentation, and modeling appropriate workplace demeanor. 1.3.1 Career Exploration–explore career opportunities and projected trends; investigate required education, training and experience; and develop an individual education plan for life long learning 1.3.2 Employment Transitions–analyze the effects of job changes, including the impact of unemployment 1.3.3 Goal Setting–identify steps for setting goals and write personal goals and objectives 1.3.4 Interest Assessment–examine aptitudes related to career options; relate personal characteristics and interests to educational and occupational opportunities 1.3.5 Job Acquisition–develop job acquisition documents and interview skills 1.3.6 Job Retention–identify appropriate work attitudes and behaviors 1.5 Employability Skills (C): Students will understand the factors essential to a productive workforce in a culturally diverse global environment. 3 Chapter Objectives Discuss how to compose a letter of application and a personal data sheet, and how to fill out an employment application. Explain how to prepare for a good interview. Describe how pre-employment tests are used by employers. Identify qualities that lead to success on the job.

4 Applying for a job p. 267 letter of application – a sales letter about an applicant written for the purpose of getting a job interview. personal data sheet – a summary of job-related information related to employment. personal references – people who can give a report about your character, education, and work habits. Letter of application and personal data sheets are important and must be prepared carefully.

5 Using sources of job leads. p. 268 Sources of job leads include: friends relatives neighbors school counselors and teachers school placement office employment agencies

6 Completing an employer’s application form. p. 269 position application form – a document used by employers that asks for information related to employment. Completing an employer’s application is an important “first job task” and should be done carefully, neatly, and completely.

7 Testing potential employees. p. 271 Pre-employment tests are used by employers to screen applicants for skills and abilities that are needed to perform certain jobs. ability test – a test that measures how well a job applicant can perform certain job tasks

8 Having a successful interview. p. 272 To have a successful position interview, you should be on time, go alone, dress properly, be calm, leave when it is over, thank the interviewer, send a brief thank-you letter, and be patient in waiting for a response. personnel interviewer – someone who has special training for talking with job applicants and hiring new employees.

9 Succeeding on your first job. p. 273 The following behaviors help lead to success on the job: asking questions avoiding complaining honoring break time having a good appearance getting to work on time being friendly doing work well and following rules.

10 Getting along with co-workers. p. 274 Getting along with co-workers includes: learning from them being friendly with everyone accepting and giving praise being dependable.

11 Getting along with co-workers. p. 274 (continued) In leaving a job: give proper notice complete existing projects have a constructive exit interview show appreciation to co- workers.

12 Exiting a job. p. 275 exit interview – an interview in which an employer asks questions about how an employee liked his/her work and inquires about job improvements that might be made.
