Many people fled Korea towards the end of World War ll. Some were the Japanese or North Koreans. They fled to China for their safety. But then China sent them back to their homes.

Most refugees were constantly moving, jumping from one house to the next, never staying for more than 2 days at the most. They were very poor, as any money handling would be a signal to the army where they were. They took food from others, making sure they would be fed enough to make it to the next house. Generals from their homes would give them dried squids. (http://www.shvoong.com/humanities/27465- north-korea-facts)

People don’t think that refugees exist today. But there are an estimated 11-12 million refugees in the world. This is an increase since the mid-1970s when there were less than 3 million refugees worldwide. In 1992 there was an estimated amount of 18 million. Afghanistan people flee to Iran and Pakistan. Sudan and Eritrea people flee to Israel, especially in the last six years. Many people help out with refugees. Alex Mandel is a senior studying SIS with focuses in International Development and the Middle East. She spent the last year studying a broad in Tel Aviv where she volunteered with the African Refugee Development Center. She participated in the 2009 Alternative Spring Break to New Orleans and Biloxi where they contributed to reconstruction efforts. This girl helps refugees with the troubles they face. Emma Gothiel is another student who is a senior majoring in SIS with concentrations in International Development and Africa. Last year she studied overseas in France and Senegal where she conducted research on West African migration to Europe. She has in the past participated in several language immersion and regional studies programs in Israel. She shows promise in helping the refugees around the world. (information found on http://www. Korea During the War On August 8 th, 1945, Near the end of World War II, the Soviet Union declared war against Japan. At this point, Japan had been depleted by the United States and its Allies. The Japanese were in no condition to fight off the Solviets. As a result, Japan surrendered exactly a week after the war was declared. It makes sense that many refugees would leave Korea because of all the war going on and disputing between countries.

Troubles past refugees had to face Some of the problems refugees face everyday are the following: Had to walk miles upon miles, if they were caught leaving, they would be tortured, executed, or held in concentration camps. North Korean soldiers were merciless. They would even kill a mothers new child. Tens of thousands of people were killed every year. Sixty percent of those killed were women. They lost so much of their family, often traveling alone.
10
Many refugees now are faced with the same problem the refugees 67 years ago faced. Many don’t have a family to travel with, often facing starvation alone.
