Internet A worldwide collection of networks that links together millions of businesses, the government, educational institutions, and individuals using modems, telephone lines, and other communication devices and media.

World Wide Web Is the part of the internet that supports multimedia and consists of a collection of linked document

Web Pages Documents or pages of information that are linked to form the World Wide Web

Web Site A collection of Web Pages that are created and maintained by a company, a university or college, a government agency or even an individual to distribute information

Web Server or Host A computer where web pages are stored and then sent out when requested, server software must be installed and the computer must be hooked up to the internet

Publishing Term used to describe the process of copying files to a web server that allows the pages to be viewed on the Internet

Hyperlink Is used to connect a web page to another web page on the same, or a different web server located anywhere in the world

HTML Hypertext markup language is a set of special tags or markups that specify links to other documents,as well as how the page is displayed

Web Browser Is a program that interprets and displays web pages and enables you to link to other Web pages The most popular ones are Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator

Terms Internet Backbone – is a collection of high speed data lines that connect major computer systems located around the world Internet Service Provider – is a company that has a permanent connection to the internet backbone

Hypertext Transfer Protocol Is a set of rules for exchanging text, graphics, sound, video and other multimedia files

Home Page Each site contains one, it is the first page a user sees when they access the web site

Yet more terms Tag – also called markup are used by HTML to define the structure and layout of the document Dynamic HTML- term used to describe the combination of HTML tags, Cascading style sheets (CSS), and scripting language like Javascript

Still more terms Extensible Markup language – (XML) is a markup language that uses tags to describe the structure and content of a document not the format Extensible Hypertext Markup language – (XHTML) is a reformulation of the HTML language so that it conforms to XML rules

Tools needed for creating HTML documents Text Editor – many to choose from we will use Notepad, used to enter, save, change or print text such as HTML Use can also use a HTML editor such as Macromedia Home site or BBEdit, more bells and whistles WYSIWYG - stands for what you see is what you get. Microsoft FrontPage, Macromedia Dreamweaver or Sausage Software Hotdog are examples. They are software with graphical user interface so you can preview the file as you work
