2 » What is Literacy Coaching? » Discussion of Reading » Activity to build our Understanding of Literacy Coaching » Enacting Coaching Session » Discussion of Coaching Guide Assignment ˃As you are completing the activities tonight, keep track of your beliefs on how you could be an effective literacy coach.

3 » In your notebook, write down your thoughts on coaching. » On the paper provided, use markers to jot down some of your thoughts and questions Literacy Coaching. » Tape your thoughts to the Thoughts chart paper in the front of the room. Tape your questions to the Questions chart paper.

4 » With a partner, review the “roles” of a Literacy Coach from Article: ˃Literacy Coach as Mentor ˃Literacy Coach as Director ˃Literacy Coach as Assessor ˃Literacy Coach as Curriculum Manager ˃Literacy Coach as Formative Observer ˃Literacy Coach as Modeler ˃Literacy Coach as Teacher ˃Literacy Coach as Trainer » After reviewing these, discuss with your partner if you had any changes in your thinking about Literacy Coaching. Does it answer any questions? Do you have more questions? If so, please write them up!

5 Let’s look at some research to help us determine our own beliefs of what makes an effective Literacy Coach. » You will read and discuss the article in a group of three. As a team, create a poster to share with the class the VIPs (Very Important Points) of the article. » After reading and creating your poster, find your new group members (look at the color on the top of your article). You will “visit” each poster and share the information you learned with each other. » You may want to take notes while listening to your group members share. Ask questions if you are not sure about something!

8 » Many coaches use a needs assessment survey to determine how to coach teachers. » Here are some actual needs assessment surveys fill out by teachers in my school. ˃review the needs assessment survey. ˃Determine the next steps/action plan to coach this teacher ˃What resources would you use to help you coach this teacher? ˃Share your analysis and coaching steps with class

9 » Use what you have learned tonight from the readings and discussions we’ve had about effective literacy coaching and professional development. » Use what know from coaching experiences you’ve had in your own life. » Check out the other readings posted on myCourses for additional information about Coaching. » BE CREATIVE!
