When I Won First Place at the Track Meet The official told all of the runners to get ready for the next race. My coach yelled to me. “All right Nicole, go down to the track and get in your assigned lane!” I ran down the stairs and got into lane number 3. My friend Melissa was in the lane next to me. We looked at each other, shook hands, and wished each other good luck. Notes 4 4 Fifth Grade I’ve been in a track meet before and know that they assign lanes in short races only. I can infer this will be a short race. Both girls are friendly.

The official shouted, “Runners take your marks!” I shook my legs out, placed my right foot as close to the starting line as was possible and took a deep breath. The official then shouted, “Get set!” I clenched my fists together, looked down the track to the finish line and got my muscles ready for the race of my life. The official then raised both of his arms in the air, shot the starting pistol and off we went! Notes 5 5 Fifth Grade The runner is probably nervous. This is what I do when I’m nervous. This is more evidence that this is a short race. The runner can see the finish line from where she’s starting.

My friend Melissa and I started out the fastest, but pretty soon I couldn’t see her or anyone else, for that matter. Fifteen seconds later my body broke through the red tape at the end of the race. My coach and teammates were cheering my name and clapping loudly. My dad came running down the bleachers to give me a big congratulatory hug. This really was the best race of my life. Notes 6 6 Fifth Grade The runner is in the lead because everyone else is behind her. She won the race. I know this because the winner gets to run through the tape like I did at a track meet one time. Nicole’s dad is really proud of her because he ran and give her a hug.
