Reminders Vocabulary Unit 10 Regular Quiz – this Friday, 11/20 If you missed the picture quiz and this morning’s make-up, you can come in Thursday morning to make it up. Check out the PPT on Propaganda to add to your knowledge! Rhetorical Analyses Rough Draft for Rhetorical Analysis #2 – due Thursday, 11/19 Bring BOTH final drafts of Rhetorical Analysis #1 and #2 to class Friday. I will pick up ONE for a grade. Outliers: Chapters (3-5) due today! Next Chapters – 6-7 – due Thursday – there will be a quiz

Argument Speech Partner share #5 (focus on position, claims, and begin to share what you might use for evidence) Tonight, focus on writing a rough outline of your speech. Put it in C-E-I structure. Focus on just the body. Don’t think about the introduction or conclusion yet. What can you use for evidence? Examples from current events/knowledge/affairs, anecdotes, MINIMAL research, etc. Use your Ethos/Pathos/Logos chart to provide you with ways to use rhetoric in your speech as you gather your evidence/examples.

Visual text Analysis: The optic Approach What is OPTIC? OPTIC is an organized approach to read and analyze visual or graphic text closely. There are 5 key elements: 1. Overview 2. Parts 3. Title 4. Interrelationships 5. Conclusion

Optic: Now you try it… Task: Analyze the Waiting for Superman DVD cover using the OPTIC approach. O verview: Conduct a brief overview of the main subject of the DVD cover. P arts: Scrutinize the parts of the visual; note any elements or details that seem important. T itle: Read the title or caption(s) of the visual for added information. I nterrelationships: Use the words in the title or caption(s) and the individual parts of the visual to determine connections and relationships within the graphic. C onclusion: Draw a conclusion about the meaning of the visual as a whole. Summarize the message in 1-2 sentences.

Visual Text Analysis: Waiting for Superman Today, we will be viewing Waiting for Superman, and the goal is to analyze and evaluate the director, Davis Guggenheim’s argument throughout the documentary. As you watch the documentary, keep track of the use of ethos/pathos/logos and how Guggenheim uses it.
