So what now…….. Instructional Focus: We will increase and monitor the use of direct and explicit vocabulary instruction within our classrooms. (Strategic Plan – Strategy #3)
7
Why did we choose this focus? *Waverly East free and reduced percentage – 65% “Children of poverty come to school with significantly fewer academic background experiences than other children………schools that are highly effective produce results that almost entirely overcome the effects of student backgrounds.” (Dr. Marzano)
8
Children of middle class have heard 48,000 words before coming to school. Children of poverty have heard only 13,000 words before coming to school. Academic background knowledge affects school learning, occupation, and status in life. Vocabulary knowledge is one of the best predictors of overall intelligence (.80 correlation). (Marzano, et. al 2011)
9
Proactive Plan: Implementation of the Reading Street program Intentional use of graphic organizers and word walls in all instructional areas Waverly East Staff will review “vocabulary strategies” each month. Waverly East staff will follow Marzano’s “Six Steps to Teaching Vocabulary” guidelines.
