6 F ACTS AND FIGURES Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in England for 2010. 16 to 24-year-old age group accounts for more than half of all newly diagnosed STIs. In England, young people aged 16-24 accounted for: 63% of chlamydia,chlamydia 54% of genital warts,genital warts 47% of gonorrhoea,gonorrhoea 41% of herpes andherpes 16% of syphilis infections diagnosed in genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinics.syphilis (Health protection agency, 2011)

8 H OW CAN STI’ S BE CONTRACTED ? Which one has the highest risk of transmitting STI’s? Vaginal penetrative sex Anal penetrative sex Oral sex Sex toys Anal penetrative sex

9 Caused by a bacterium called Chlamydia Trachomatis found in the semen of men and vaginal fluids of women. Can be caught by having unprotected sex with someone with the infection, or sharing sex toys with an infected person. Symptoms include: Unusual discharge from vagina or penis Pain when passing urine Burning, itching sensation Lower abdominal (pelvic) pain Important to get tested as it can cause long – term health problems including infertility. Chlamydia

10 Genital warts Caused by a virus HPV Herpes Simplex virus HSV – 1 Causes cold sores and genital warts HSV -2 Causes Herpes on the genitals Often no symptoms Once you get it you have it for life Can be passed on as occasionally the virus is present in the genital area

11 Syphilis Bacterial infection Passed from infected mother to unborn child Stage one – painless but highly infectious sore on genitals or around the mouth Stage two – skin rash and sore throat Stage three- serious damage to the body Usually treated with penicillin

12 Gonorrhea STD Sexually transmitted disease Bacteria that lives and grows in warm moist areas such as the reproductive tract Transmitted through the penis, mouth, anus or vagina Symptoms in men can include; burning sensation when urinating white, yellow, or green discharge from the penis. Symptoms in women can consist of; Painful or burning sensation when urinating Increased vaginal discharge, vaginal bleeding between periods

14 H OW CAN STI’ S BE PREVENTED ? Dam Stops vaginal fluid, semen and blood from being transferred during oral sex Sex toys should not be shared or condoms should be used Condoms Used during vaginal, anal and oral sex Femidoms Used for vaginal penetrative sex

15 W HAT DO I DO IF I THINK I HAVE AN STI? Go to a sexual health or GUM clinic. Strictly confidential A doctor or nurse will ask you about your medical and sexual history Undergo a test (normally a urine test) Receive the results
