The “passé composé” is the tense that help us to express actions done in the past. Ex: Hier, j’ai mangé une pizza (Yesterday, I ate a pizza) Notice there are 2 parts in the verb “ai” and “mangé” “ai” is the verb “AVOIR” in present tense (= présent) “mangé” is called the “Participe passé” in French. AVOIR in present tense + Participe Passé Or ETRE in present tense + Participe Passé Ex 1: Hier, il a mangé une pizza (Yesterday, he ate a pizza) Ex 2: Hier, elle est allée au cinéma (Yesterday, she went to the movie) HOW TO BUILD THE “PASSÉ COMPOSÉ”?

Verbs in French are classified in 3 groups. 1er group = verbs ending with – ER (in infinitive form) 2 nd group = verbs ending with – IR (in infinitive form), with ending – ISS with nous/vous/ils 3 rd group = all the rest (irregular verbs) HOW TO BUILD A PARTICIPE PASSÉ ?

To build the participe passé for verbs belonging to the 1 st group, ending with – ER, and conjugated with AVOIR. Take the verb in infinitive form, remove the ending --- – ER, and replace it by the ending – É. Ex: Infinitive Participe Passé Nager Nagé Passé composé: J’ai nagé HOW TO BUILD A PARTICIPE PASSÉ ?
