Sequences of tenses (in indirect discourses) When you’re reporting what someone else said without using a direct quotation, you use indirect discourse. In indirect discourse, you will have a main clause and a dependent clause. Le roi dit qu’il travaille.

Sequence of tenses describes the agreement between the verb in the main clause and the verb in the dependent clause. If the verb in the main clause is in the present, the verb in the dependent clause can be in the present, the future, the passé composé, or the imparfait. If the verb in the main clause is in the passé composé, the verb in the dependent clause can be in the imparfait, the conditional or the past perfect.

(at some time in the future) qu’il a travaillé./qu’il travaillait. that he worked. (at some time in the past) Le roi a dit (passé) The king said… qu’il travaillait. that he was working/worked. (at some time in the past) qu’il travaillerait. that he would work. (at some time in the future) qu’il avait travaillé. that he had worked. (at some time further in the past)

Practice Translations (include with classwork) The princess said she wanted to go out with the prince. However, the queen said that she would turn her into a frog. The prince says that he doesn’t care. The king said that the prince had already been turned into a frog.
