Procedure for Use of Stihl Multisystem (Revision 0 – 18th January 2011) Toolbox Talk
2
HAZARDS AND RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH THE USE OF THE MULTISYSTEM Risk of cuts, including severe injuries to fingers Injury to eyes from flying debris Noise and vibration Inhalation of exhaust fumes Injury to other persons Risk of fire PERSONS AUTHORISED TO USE THE MULTISYSTEM The MultiSystem tool must only be operated by trained and authorised persons. A list of persons authorised to use the MultiSystem tool is kept by the Grounds Officer and is displayed at Bedford Road and Balgownie.
3
PPE TO BE WORN WHEN USING MULTISYSTEM Safety glasses Ear protection (If disposable earplugs being used ensure hands are clean when inserting or removing from the ear). Protective gloves (these must be worn when changing or inspecting attachments) Steel toe capped safety boots High visibility vest When operating the equipment loose clothing should not be worn, long hair should be tied back, any loose jewellery should be removed. Legs must be covered at all times.
4
PRE-USE INSPECTION Before use inspect that the following are in good working order: Throttle trigger Throttle trigger interlock Stop switch Handles (should be kept clean and dry at all times, free from oil and dirt, securely tightened) Spark plug boot (should be securely fitted) Ensure there are no loose fittings or fuel leaks
5
AREA TO BE WORKED ON Before starting work examine the area for objects which could be thrown up or become entangled in the multisystem. Look for stones, pieces of metal or other solid objects and animal faeces. Ensure that a good footing can be obtained. Look out for trip hazards and any slippery conditions, as these should be avoided. Other persons must be kept a safe distance from the area being worked on. Where work is to be carried out in busy areas, barriers complete with signage may have to be erected around the area or the work carried out outwith peak times. When using the rotor attachment avoid areas where the roots of trees may be encountered. Do not use the multisystem with the rotor attachment if you suspect there may be underground electrical cables in the area to be worked on. The presence of streetlighting or marker posts nearby may indicate this – contact the Grounds Officer/Chargehand if you are in any doubt.
6
USE OF MULTISYTEM Depending on the multisystem attachments you are using, check the position of the gearbox and adjust as necessary to avoid the risk of injury from the tool rotating in the wrong direction. On metal tools (e.g. rotor blades) position the gearbox so that it is below the drive tube On sweeping tools (brushes etc) position the gearbox so it is above the drive tube. The brush or rotors must be securely mounted and free to move.
7
USE OF MULTISYTEM (continued) If using sweeping attachments or bristle brushes, both sweeping/ brush attachments must be mounted. If using the bristle brush mount both deflector extensions. Always stand behind the deflector or to one side of the machine during operation, never stand in front of the rotating attachments. Always have both feet firmly on the ground in comfortable balanced position when operating the multsystem. Always hold the machine firmly with both hands. When transporting the machine, turn off the engine. In the event that the attachment needs to be examined, the engine must be switched off and the attachment come to a complete halt. Wear gloves to reduce the risk of injury. When fuelling the multisystem, the procedure for fuelling petrol driven equipment must be observed.
