Chapter 6.3. Metamorphic rock Metamorphism: the process in which one type of rock changes into a metamorphic rock heat, pressure, and hot fluids cause metamorphism

2 types of metamorphism: 1)Contact Metamorphism: magma is in a contact with the surrounding rocks 2) Regional Metamorphism: changes in temperature and pressure over a large area – result of tectonic forces – most common type

Classification of Metamorphic Rocks 1.Foliated Rocks: grains are arranged in planes or bands Examples: slate, schist, and gneiss. 2. Nonfoliated Rocks: grains are not arranged Usually only one mineral Examples: marble and quartzite.
