President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940. This created the country’s first peacetime draft serving as a backup system to provide manpower to the U.S. Armed Forces. Registration continues today to provide men for service in the Armed Forces if there is a national emergency.

It is a legal obligation to register with the Selective Service if: You are a male U.S. citizen or male resident alien You are between the ages of 18 and 26 You must register within 30 days of your 18th birthday. Not registering can result in jail time, a fine, and other serious consequences.
