11  President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940.  This created the country’s first peacetime draft serving as a backup system to provide manpower to the U.S. Armed Forces.  Registration continues today to provide men for service in the Armed Forces if there is a national emergency.

12  It is a legal obligation to register with the Selective Service if:  You are a male U.S. citizen or male resident alien  You are between the ages of 18 and 26  You must register within 30 days of your 18th birthday.  Not registering can result in jail time, a fine, and other serious consequences.

13  Go to any U.S. post office and ask for a registration card  Registration cards are also mailed  Register online at www.sss.gov
