3. New York is situated on the eastern coast of the USA. It is the biggest city in the USA, an important seaport, and a financial, business and cultural centre.

5. Manhattan The heart of Manhattan is Central Park. It is economic and cultural centre of New York; an island linked to the rest of the city by tunnels and bridges. The Empire State Building - until 1971 the tallest building in the world (381m).

6. Manhattan The World Trade Center with its Twin Towers. It was destroyed by terrorist attack on 11 September 2001. The Times Square with theatres, cinemas and night-clubs. Broadway with Carnegie Hall.

8. The Statue of Liberty A copper statue given to the USA by France in 1887. She has a tablet with 4 July 1776 in her left hand a torch in her right hand. The statue stands on Liberty Island near the port. It is the symbol of New York and the first sight for many immigrants; so it has become a symbol of hope and freedom.
