Day 2: Researching your argument Consider putting groups together before this lesson so they can discuss the examples. Do not assign topics yet.

Proposition: Everyone should have a pool. Affirmative side: Everyone should have a pool.  Think of all the reasons that could support the proposition. provides exercise improves social interactions with friends increases property value saves money and time more privacy than a public pool  Select your strongest reasons (1 for each group member); these are the arguments your team will make.

Things to consider:  Your arguments may need to change after you start researching if you can’t find enough strong evidence.  You must use credible sources. Avoid sites such as: wikipedia, google answers, yahoo answers, blogs, etc.  Your evidence could include facts, statistics, or quotes from an expert.  Paraphrase the information unless you are using a direct quote from an expert.  Include the source and an explanation of how the evidence supports your reason.  WRITE NEATLY! You and your team members will need to read this information for the debate.

Find your evidence.

How do I record my evidence? Either copy directly from the site or paraphrase the information. cdc.gov/h ealthywat er/swimm ing Water-based exercise improves affected joints and decreases joint pain in people with different types of arthritis. Swimming pools People should own a swimming pool. Swimming provides health benefits Swimming is a non-weight bearing type of exercise. Because there is no impact, it is beneficial to people who have any type of disease that affects their joints or for people who are overweight and can’t do strenuous exercise.

Example: It is important that everyone own a swimming pool because of the many health benefits pools provide. For example, the CDC has stated that water-based exercise decreases joint pain in people with different types of arthritis; consequently, this type of exercise improves affected joints. Swimming is a non- weight bearing type of activity. Because there is no impact, it is beneficial to people who have any type of disease that affects their joints or for people who are overweight and can’t handle strenuous exercise. The Mayo Clinic also offers statistics in support of water-based work outs. It has been proven that a person weighing 160 pounds burns 511 calories per hour while swimming. Similarly, jogging burns 584 calories in this same person. Swimming helps people burn about the same number of calories as jogging, but it does not hurt the joints because it is a non-impact exercise. In addition to these physical rewards, water-based exercise has significant mental benefits as well. According to the CDC, swimming can decrease anxiety in people, and exercise therapy in warm water has been known to decrease depression and improve mood. Mental wellness is essential to a person’s overall health, and having a pool can contribute to a positive emotional state. It is obvious that swimming offers many positive health advantages; therefore, all people should own a swimming pool.

How will I be evaluated? The writing of your argument will be evaluated using the following rubric.
