It began after the assassination of Malcolm X The “leader” of movement LeRoi Jones moved from Manhattan’s Lower East Side uptown to Harlem. Jones started the Black Arts Repertory Theatre/School (BARTS)

Black theater groups and Black poetry performances and journals developed Black theaters served as the focus of poetry, dance, and music performances in addition to formal and ritual drama. They were also venues for community meetings, lectures, study groups, and film screenings.

The decline began in 1974 The Black Arts Movement declined with the Black Power movement. Internal and External problems allowed for the dismantle of the movement
