Subcontinent Of India Subcontinent – a large landmass, such as India, smaller than a continent Arabian Sea – body of water off the western coast of India Bay of Bengal – body of water off the eastern cost of India Indian Ocean – body of water off the southern cost of India

Monsoons Of India Monsoons – are seasonal winds that bring either moist or dry air to the region. Dry Monsoon – winter dry winds from the north – Nov. - Jan (less that 10 in. of precip.) Wet Monsoon – summer winds from the Indian Ocean bring heavy rains and flooding – June – Oct.

Climate Of India Himalayas – are snow- covered peaks Humid-Subtropical – On the Plains south of the Himalayas -Hot, humid summers with lots of rain Tropical - Central India and Sri Lanka - Warm all year -Wet and Dry Monsoons - Humid Tropical -Heavy monsoon rains to the SW, the Maldives and Bangladesh Desert and Steppe -Southern and western India and most of Pakistan

Rivers Of India Ganges R. – Sacred River for Hindu’s; flows from the Himalayas east to the Bay of Bengal - Ganges Delta is most fertile land in the region Indus R. – Flows from the Plateau of Tibet through northern India then SW through Kashmir and Pakistan to the Arabian Sea. Saravasti R. – Ancient river: flowed from the Himalaya’s westward to the Arabian Sea. “Mother of Rivers” – dried up between 2500 – 2000 B.C.

Mountains Of India Himalayas – 1500 m. – northern border of India Mt. Everest – 29,035 ft. – border between Nepal and China (highest mount on the planet) Deccan Plateau – large plateau in the southern portion of the region - between the Eastern and Western Ghats

Resources Of India Agriculture - grew tea, rice, nuts, jute (makes rope) - harvesting trees - livestock raising Natural Resources India – iron ore, coal Pakistan – natural gas Sri Lanka – gem stones
