History of Wind Power in Sri Lanka The First ever 1.5 kW 3 bladed dc wind generator was installed at Pattiyapola in the Hambantota District at the Rural Energy Centre under a project funded by the UNEP. In Sri Lanka The Water Resources Board have tried out different wind driven water pumps with the assistance of the Government of The Netherlands way back in the late 70’s and early 80’s. In late 80’s the first ever scientific study of the wind potential was carried out wit Dutch assistance carried out by the CEB. In the mid Nineties the first 3MW wind pilot project was carried out by CEB. NREL did an island wide survey of wind potential that revealed enormous wind potential in Sri Lanka. Commencing from mid 2000 large scale wind electric generation commenced.
