Languages at The Open University English, Spanish, French, German, Italian & Chinese to 8000 part-time, adult language students. Blended approach: independent study using mixed media and support inc. face-to-face, synchronous and asynchronous online teaching. Course materials produced centrally, teaching support provided locally. Course developers and coordinators (40+) and tutors (250 part-time teachers).

Languages at the OU on iTunes U 12 collections (309 assets) of audio and video resources iBooks Languages materials represent less than 10% of OU iTunes U materials But they account for nearly a third of downloads for OU materials on iTunes U (20 million downloads) Top 10 download languages collections 30/3/2015

Mobile Learning (MALL) Educational advantages: i) learn on the go and in small bites; ii) audio, visual, writing, pinyin, English in one interactive medium; iii) interactive, game-like Technical advantages: i) work offline; ii) developers can update it when necessary Learner oriented – assist learners at the point of need and fit in with their mobile life style

Chinese Characters App Content: 400 plus characters. 20 lessons chronologically build upon each other. Each lesson has 4 sections: Writing Practice Listening Test Reading Test Word Search

Languages Open Resources Online LORO is about:...making all teaching materials for all levels and languages available to all users; …making OU tutorial materials available to the wider languages community; …allowing users to share their own materials with the whole languages community; …starting a change in the way we work (OER, access, transparency, quality).
