Lesson 3.3: 1.Homework Quiz 2.Constructing Perpendiculars to a Line

Warm Up #1:

Warm Up #2: Use a compass and a ruler to construct a triangle with side lengths of 5 cm, 6 cm, and 8 cm.

More Perpendiculars: Pay attention to the steps I take in constructing a perpendicular to a line from a point off the line. Write the steps in your Learning Targets Handout. Shortest Distance Conjecture – the shortest distance from a point to a line is measured along the _______________________ from the point to the line.

Vocabulary: Altitude of a Triangle – the height of a triangle A triangle has 3 different altitudes and therefore it has 3 different heights!!

Constructing Altitudes: Pay attention to the steps I take in constructing an altitude in a triangle. Write the steps in your Learning Targets Handout.

Practice: Construct an altitude in an acute triangle and then in an obtuse triangle.

Practice #1: Construct an acute triangle. Label it XYZ. Construct altitude ZW with point W on XY. (Your job is to locate where on XY point D is.)

Homework: P. 156-158: 1, 2, 7, 8, 20

Summary: Take the time to add any conjectures, steps for constructions, examples, … to your LT. Note your level of understanding for each section we covered in 3.3.
