1 How to quote a Shakespearean drama: Quoting a Single Character: -A quote that is four lines or less goes in quotation marks and is incorporated into the text. *Use a slash ( / ) with space on both sides to separate the lines of text.) Example: For instance, after identifying Romeo at the Capulet party, Tybalt predicts that Romeo’s presence will have detrimental consequences in the future: “I will withdraw; but this intrusion shall, / Now seeming sweet, convert to bitt’rest gall” (I.v.92-93).

2 How to quote a Shakespearean drama: Quoting a Single Character: -A quote that runs more than four lines is formatted like a block quote. Start the quote on a new line and set the entire quotation block one inch from the left margin (double tab). Example: For instance, Romeo immediately notices Juliet’s beauty when he walks into the Capulet party: O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night As a rich jewel in an Ethiop’s ear— Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear! So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows As yonder lady o’er her fellows shows. (I.v.45-50)

3 How to quote a Shakespearean Drama Quoting Two or More Characters: Use block quote format. Begin the quotation on a new line following the lead-in. Set the quotation off from the body of your paper with one inch indentations (double tab). If a character's speech continues onto the next line of your paper, indent subsequent lines an additional 1/4 inch (about 3 spaces). Double-space each line. Write the characters' names in capital letters followed by a period. Do not use quotation marks. Example: For example, Juliet denies Romeo’s first attempt to kiss her: ROMEO: Have not saints lips, and holy palmers too? JULIET: Ay, Pilgrim, lips that they must use in prayer. ROMEO: O, then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do! They pray; grant thou, lest faith turn to despair. JULIET: Saints do not move, though grant for prayer’s sake. (I.v.102-106)
